GoGo Electric Uganda (Formerly Boderwerk) Scoops Ashden Award.

By Andrew saire Alibawa.

GoGo Electric Uganda, previously known as Boderwerk, has made remarkable strides in the sustainable energy sector, earning the prestigious Ashden Award. This year, the awards aim to power up inclusive innovation, creating a fairer low-carbon world by tackling inequality and empowering communities on the frontline of the climate crisis through jobs, skills, and training.

The Ashden Awards celebrate organizations that demonstrate passion, potential, and commitment to sustainability. They are not focused on the size of the organization or its marketing prowess, but rather on its impact, dedication, and transformative potential. This year’s theme emphasizes the importance of inclusive innovation and equitable growth in the fight against climate change.

Jonas Bisasso, Chief Operating Officer of GoGo Electric Uganda, expressed immense gratitude for this recognition. He highlighted the significant contributions of GoGo Electric Bikes, which have revolutionized transportation for many riders in Uganda. “Our bikes not only offer an eco-friendly alternative to traditional motorcycles but also provide substantial economic savings for the riders. By reducing fuel costs and maintenance expenses, our electric bikes contribute to a more sustainable and affordable mode of transportation,” Bisasso remarked.

A key aspect of GoGo Electric Uganda’s success is their comprehensive training programs. The company offers detailed training for its managers, equipping them with the skills needed to succeed in this fast-evolving sector. Moreover, while the drivers of the bikes are not GoGo staff, the company provides them with extensive training. This training covers the technical features of the bikes they lease from GoGo and includes financial literacy, enabling the riders to take out and manage affordable loans to access the bikes. Claire Bakhita, the Projects and Development Manager, emphasized the importance of these programs in empowering the riders economically and ensuring the sustainability of the initiative.

Since its inception, GoGo Electric has made a significant impact on Uganda’s transportation landscape. Many of GoGo’s electric bikes are now hitting the roads in the capital, Kampala, a city with over one million motorbikes. The transition to electric vehicles is expected to be a major creator of green jobs in the years ahead. Currently, GoGo Electric operates 66 swap stations across the country, facilitating easy battery swaps for their electric bikes and ensuring minimal downtime for the riders.

Bisasso noted, “The switch to electric bikes is not just about reducing emissions; it’s about creating a sustainable future with economic opportunities for all. We are committed to leading this change and empowering our communities through innovative solutions.”

Winning the Ashden Award amplifies GoGo Electric Uganda’s voice in the global sustainability discourse. It highlights our innovative approach and the tangible impact solutions. This recognition opens new avenues for collaboration, funding, and expansion, enabling GoGo Electric to reach more communities and continue driving positive change.

As GoGo Electric Uganda  we remain focused on our mission to deliver sustainable, inclusive solutions. Our success serves as an inspiration for other organizations, proving that passion, innovation, and commitment to sustainability can lead to profound and lasting impact. Bisasso further noted.
